Short-Term Programs ~ Science

Lab Equipment Module

Sub-Module 1 (Recommend 1 week, 6 periods instruction)
The student will learn to:
•  Identify commonly used laboratory equipment
•  Identify accessibility issues with commonly used lab equipment
•  Explore lab equipment developed for the visually impaired

Sub-Module 2 (Recommend 1 week, 6 periods instruction)
The student will learn to:
Identify the tools and SI units used to measure matter and demonstrate understanding by:
•  Measuring solid objects—height, width, length
•  Measuring liquids by volume
•  Measuring objects by mass (weight)
•  Recording temperatures

Braille In Science

Sub-Module 1 (Recommend 1 week, 6 periods instruction)
The student will learn to:
•  Read and write Braille chemical signs and symbols, such as chemical arrows, bonds,
    ring structures, and chemical elements
•  Read and write Braille chemical formulas and equations, such as arrows, Lewis dot diagrams,
electron bonds, horizontal bonds, vertical bonds and use (SC)2 to create chemical formulas
•  Read and write Braille superscripts and subscripts denoting things like electron charge,
    atomic number and mass number

(SC)2 Module

Sub-Module 1 (Recommend 1 week, 6 periods instruction)
The student will use (SC)2 to explore:
•  Equation construction
•  Fractional relationships
•  Algebra skills
•  Scientific formulae and equations (Chemistry and Physics)
•  Dimensional analysis

Graphing Module

Sub-Module 1 (Recommend 1 week, 12 periods instruction)
The student will learn to use Touch Grids to explore:
•  Cartesian Coordinates
•  Quadrant identification
•  Graphing numeric data sets (analysis, bar graphs, line graphs, scatter plots, pie charts)
•  Wave structure (crest, trough, amplitude)
•  Multiplication tables

The Periodic Table

The periodic table is an essential part of physical science and chemistry courses. Its simple chart-like appearance belies the wealth of information that it contains. In this short course, students learn about the origin of the modern periodic table of elements and learn how to explore a braille and large print version of it, understand it’s features and how to extract information from it.
