NMSBVI Programs - The Early Childhood Program

Parent Information | Low Vision Clinic

NMSBVI’s Early Childhood Program (ECP) is part of NMSBVI’s continuum of services offered to children throughout each stage of growth and development. The ECP building is located at 801 Stephen Moody St. SE in Albuquerque and houses three different programs:  The Family Infant Toddler Program, Outreach Program, and the Preschool and Kindergarten Program. For information on the FIT and Outreach programs, please see those program tabs on this website. The new ECP facility opened in January of 2009 and boasts 37,000 square feet of innovative classroom space to enhance learning and a large playground complete with shaded areas, beautiful green lawns and even a “tricycle track”.

The Preschool and Kindergarten Program serves children who are blind or visually impaired between the ages of 2 ˝ and 6 from Albuquerque and the surrounding areas. Students are required to have a diagnosed vision impairment that adversely impacts their capacity to learn in a more traditional classroom. All students are placed in the program by IEP committee decision held by the student’s resident public school system.

The academic program at the Preschool and Kindergarten Program consists of literacy, math, concept development, socialization and, if appropriate, preparation for learning Braille. Music, art, dance and sports round out the experience. Students are encouraged to explore and to become familiar with their immediate environment; then expand outward to travel successfully into new and unfamiliar areas. To this end, the classes take many field trips into the community including visits to the zoo, museums, stores, parks and the NM State Fair.

The Preschool and Kindergarten Program offers additional services to students who qualify.
These services include:
    • Classroom instruction from Teachers of the Visually Impaired
    • Orientation and Mobility instruction
    • Speech-Language Therapy
    • Physical Therapy
    • Occupation Therapy
    • Nursing
    • Social Work
    • Audiology
    • Transportation
