Many Volunteer Activities ~ Which is Right for You?

Special Events
The volunteer role for special events will be for large events held on our main campus in Alamogordo. These events may include but are not limited to working at the Otero County Fair Booth, the Halloween Carnival, the Veteran’s Day Assembly, SCASB (athletic & narrative arts event), or setting up and lighting luminarias. Other options may be to help with the decorating of parade floats and helping with dances. Volunteer hours will vary, depending on the specific event.

BRAVI: Braillists & Recordists Aiding the Visually Impaired
Free training is available to teach volunteers to work in any of these BRAVI areas:
• Monitor: responsible for recordings using a computer. Will be taught how to translate the written word using a disk or computer file into audio CDs. May include types descriptions of pictures and/or graphs.
• Braille Transcriber: required to receive certification from the Library or Congress. After receiving certification, transcribers must familiarize themselves with “Code and Techniques of Textbook Formatting.” Primary responsibility is transcribing printed material into Braille.
• Braille Duplication: must learn to make duplicate copies of Braille masters using a thermoform machine. (Process involves standing.)
• Large Print Formatter: work with files, translating them into large print following the formatting guidelines set by American Printing House for the Blind. This person would also be scanning and working with pictures/graphs.
• Large Print Proofreader: read over the large print material looking for and marking errors. (Can be done in your home or at the NMSBVI Alamogordo Campus!)
