Note to Users

It is strongly recommended that you not use ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate with any version of JAWS earlier than 6.20. Version 6.20 is a free update for authorized JAWS 6.0 users and it contains many code fixes that are specific to this feature. You can download JAWS 6.20 from Freedom Scientific's JAWS for Windows Headquarters page at http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/JAWS_HQ.asp.

What Is ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate?

ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate is a program that allows you to establish a connection between your PAC Mate and a computer with JAWS installed. You can connect your PAC Mate and computer using a USB cable, network connection, modem, or wireless local area network. Once you establish a connection, you can run programs, read documents and Web pages, and work with files and folders on your computer using only your PAC Mate. Commands that you issue and text that you type are sent to your computer, and you receive speech and Braille feedback on the PAC Mate.

Getting Started

To use ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate, install JAWS 6.20 or later on the computer you want to connect to. During the installation process, required JAWS remote access server components will be installed automatically.

Establishing a Remote Connection

After you have installed and activated JAWS on the computer, you can begin using ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate. Establish an ActiveSync standard or guest connection between your PAC Mate and your computer. Information on using ActiveSync can be found in your PAC Mate Owner's Manual. You can use the supplied USB cable, a network connection, modem, or wireless local area network. For information on the different ways you can connect your PAC Mate to your computer, refer to your PAC Mate Owner's Manual.

After you connect your PAC Mate and computer, do the following:

  1. On your computer, open the Start menu and choose Programs or All Programs. Open the JAWS program group, Tools, PAC Mate Remote Desktop. ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate starts and an icon appears in your Windows system tray.

Tip: If you want ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate to start automatically when JAWS starts, open the Options menu and choose Basics. locate the Automatically Start PAC Mate Desktop check box and press the SPACEBAR to select it.

  1. On your PAC Mate, press JAWS KEY+SHIFT+F4. You hear, "PAC Mate remote mode on.".
  2. After Remote JAWS starts on the computer, you can issue commands, read documents and Web pages, and work with files and folders on your computer through your PAC Mate.
  3. You can press JAWS KEY+SHIFT+F4 to toggle between using the PAC Mate and the remote computer. This lets you work with your PAC Mate without disconnecting from the remote computer.
  4. To stop working in remote mode, press JAWS KEY+F4 ON THE PAC MATE. You hear, "Do you really want to quit JAWS? Press Enter to quit now computer and the PAC Mate returns to its normal mode of operation. To resume use of your computer, you will have to reload JAWS.

Note: There is a known problem when the RIGHT SHIFT Key is pressed in combination with the TAB Key. With this release of ActiveSync Remote PAC Mate, when you need to press the SHIFT+TAB combination, be sure to use the LEFT SHIFT Key.
