"First Annual Glow Ball Golf Tournament"

April 1st, 2017 (Public Event)

Come out and compete in the second annual Glow Ball Golf Tournament! This benefit will take place at the Desert Lakes Golf Course. Proceeds to benefit the NMSBVI Foundation.

Student Council Election

October 4th, 2016

On Tuesday, October 4th, from 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Key Club/Student Council Elections will take place in Jack Hall. All students are cordially invited to vote after they have finished their lunches. There will be signature sheets and ballots in print and Braille. If a student is unable to vote during this period of time, they will be provided an Absentee Ballot. The election results will be announced on Wednesday, October 5th at 8:00 a.m. during morning announcements.

Fire Prevention & Safety Training - Burro Flats Fire Department

October 12th, 2016

The Burro Flats Volunteer Fire Department will come to the Alamogordo campus to teach students about fire prevention and safety. They will bring educational materials and equipment to demonstrate for our students. This activity is part of the National Fire Prevention Week. The event is scheduled between 10:30 - 11:15 a.m.


Blood Drive

October 19th, 2016 (Public Event)

NMSBVI of Alamogordo will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, October 19th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm in the mobile unit. If you would like to sign up please visit United Blood Services Appointment Website link for more information.


Halloween Carnival 2016

October 26th, 2016 (6 p.m. - 9 p.m.) (Public Event)

We will be opening our campus to the community once again for our Halloween Carnival! We will have candy, games, food, snacks, and even a Haunted House. In the past years students did a wonderful job preparing our campus for the evening's events. We even saw some adults come out of the Haunted House frightened. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in costume! Although there is no admission charge, all games, activities and food will require purchase. All proceeds benefit the Senior class Activities fund.

December 1st - 11th, 2016

Students will be holding a "Toys for Tots" drive and collecting donations of new toys and stuffed animals. The toys will be distributed to children in need in the Otero County Community. Donations are appreciated.


Student Christmas Program

December 1st, 2016 (2:30 p.m.) (Public Event)

The NMSBVI Christmas Program will be packed full of talent and jingle bells to ring in our Christmas season. Students have been practicing in music class and in private sessions to perfect their act and bring us all joy as we watch them on stage. From silvery voices to the instruments they are mastering, each year brings new talent to impress us. The performance will be held at 2:30 p.m., in the Bert Reeves Auditorium.


Student Life Skills - Silent Auction

December 8th, 2016

In the woodshop, students have been making a myriad of woodworking projects, ranging from pens, magnifying glasses & letter opener sets, to cutting boards. These items will be bid on through silent auction during the week of December 8th, with culmination of the bidding occurring during the Holiday Sampler Event on December 9th. Bidding will end Dec. 8th @ 3:45 p.m. Letters will go home to parents on Dec. 2nd, to allow you to enter a bid on your child's project if you would like.


Student Life Skills - 7th Annual Holiday Sampler

December 8th, 2016

Things are a bustle of activity in the Life Skills Program this time of year. Preparations have already started to make the most delicious appetizers and desserts for the 7th annual Holiday Sampler. Each secondary student is responsible for picking recipes and making the item of their choice. Join us in WEC to taste these wonderful treats.


Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights

December 10th, 2016 (5:00 p.m.) (Public Event)

NMSBVI will take part in this annual tradition, and will have a float representing the school in the parade.

Students and Staff will celebrate together before the Winter Break begins.


Key Club/Student Council Raffle

December 15th, 2016

Key Club/Student Council is sponsoring a raffle. Get your tickets from any club or council member ($1 per ticket). The drawing will take place on December 15th in the dining hall. First prize is a Large Butterball Turkey, Second prize is a ham, and third prize is a basket of assorted fruits and snacks. All proceeds from this raffle will help pay the costs of of some of the upcoming student activities such as the Senior Prom, Senior class gift,"Rowdy-O" and the end of the year banquet.

Braille Challenge Weekend

February 24th-26th, 2017

Students in grades 1-12 from across New Mexico will come to NMSBVI to test their braille skills while competing for prizes. Extra activities include a dance and roller hockey demonstration. For more information and registration, contact Julie Johnson at (575) 439-4432.

Golden Bear Pride Day

March 23rd, 2017

On this day we will be celebrating all “Golden Bears,” staff and students with pizza for lunch, “Golden Bear Pride Cake,” fresh fruit, and Blue and Gold Ribbons. Evening staff and dormitory students will have an ice cream social along with fresh fruit held at Garrett Dorm from 7:00-8:00. Please remember to wear your Blue and Gold T-Shirts and show your “Golden Bear Pride!”


Clothing Drive

February 17th - March 31st, 2017

The Key Club/Student Council are taking donations of new or gently used clothes. Donation boxes can be found in most buildings on the Alamogordo campus.

Fire Prevention & Safety Training - Burro Flats Fire Department

First Quarter Report Cards & Student Progress Reports

October 18th - 25th, 2015

TVI's will begin contacting parents/guardians beginning Oct. 18 - 25, 2015 to update them on their student's progress. First quarter report cards will be issued October 23rd.


Annual White Cane Day Awareness

October 20th, 2015 (Public Event)

The annual White Cane Day Awareness Walk will take place on October 20. This year we will walk to our school and have a small ceremony with snacks in the dining room. We will be walking from the Chamber of Commerce, as we have in years past. We will plan to load after the secondary students lunch, 1:25-1:30. We will ride the buses down to the Chamber, and begin walking no later than 2 pm. After the ceremony in the dining room, guests may tour our new WEC building. Please come and walk with us!

Family Weekend on Campus

November 6th - 8th, 2015

Parents, mark your calendars for this weekend. This will be an on-campus learning event for you and your child to experience VI skills in fun and engaging ways. As has become our tradition, we will be hosting a Family Weekend on Campus November 6-8th! Family Weekend on Campus is designed to be a time for families to see your child's learning environment, meet staff face-to-face that you often only get to know by phone, and learn skills and information that may help you support your child more effectively. We also strive to incorporate fun and great food into the weekend!

ATTENTION FAMILIES AROUND THE STATE!! For the first time ever, we are also opening Family Weekend up to 20 families from around the state that do not have their school-age students enrolled at NMSBVI to come visit us! Would you like a chance to receive some vision specific training that might help you teach your child better? Have you wondered what NMSBVI Residential Campus might have to offer your child? Come spend the weekend with us November 6-8th. We provide transportation from Albuquerque, meals and hotel for Saturday night for those families that want to come to this informative and fun weekend. Into The Stratosphere! - Presentation with Jeff Killebrew and Michael Shinabery

December 10th, 2015 (3:10 - 4:00 p.m.) (Public Event)

Please mark your calendars . . . You are invited to attend a special presentation titled, "Into The Stratosphere!" featuring Jeff Killebrew & Michael Shinabery. Climb aboard NASA's SOFIA / Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy aircraft with Alamogordo's own Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors as they share their recent flight experience. Learn about the purpose of the SOFIA Program; Infrared Astronomy; and how our students will explore the world of the invisible through tactile graphics.

Luminarias Campus Walk

Join us for a campus walk on December 16th to observe the beauty of the NMSBVI Alamogordo Campus lit up with luminarias. Luminarias are a time-honored tradition of the holidays in the Southwest and they give everything a warm holiday glow! Stop by the gazebo for some hot chocolate amd merry music performed by the students.

Key club/Student Council Valentine's Day Raffle

The students will be selling raffle tickets for Valentine's Prizes. Tickets Cost $1.00 each. First Prize is Dinner and a Movie for two. Second Prize is a Large stuffed Animal with a large box of Chocolate. Third prize is a basket of assorted fruits and candies. All proceeds from this raffle will help pay the costs of some upcoming student events such as the "Golden Bear Pride Day," "Crime Victim's Remembrance Day," Senior Prom, Senior class gift, "Rowdy-O" and the end-of-year banquet.

Job Shadow Program

February 8th 2016

All secondary students will have the opportunity to participate in a job shadowing experience on Feb. 8th, through the Life Skills Program. Job Shadowing is a work experience option where students learn about different jobs by walking through a day or part of a day as a shadow to a competent worker. Students will write a reflection within the next day about their experience.

Adaptive Ski Program Begins

January 14th - February 25th, 2016

Students enrolled in our Intensive Support Program (ISP) will be participating in the Adaptive Ski Program at Ski Apache for seven weeks.


"AdvancED External Review Exit Report"

March 3, 2016 @ 2:30 p.m. (Public Event)

All Students, staff & Community stakeholders are invited to join us as we receive the exit report from our school's recent accreditation visit. This presentation will take place at the Bert Reeves Auditorium, and will be presented by Elsie Scott, Lead Evaluator/AdvancED.

Key Club/Student Council - Spring Raffle

February 29th - March 24th, 2016

This will be the final fundraiser for the school year. Proceeds will help pay for the cost of "Golden Bear Pride Day," "Crime Victim's Remembrance Day," "Rowdy-O," "Prom," and the "End-of-Year Banquet." Remaining contributions will be donated to charity. Cost=$1 per ticket, you do not need to be present to win.

  • 1st prize: Large Spring Basket filled with assorted treats

"Annual Parents of Blind Children of NM Seminar"

April 8th, 2016 @ 1:30-5:30 p.m. (Public Event)

Parents, mark your calendars for this event. This free seminar will take place on Friday, April 8th, 2016, at the Sheraton Uptown Hotel in Albuquerque. This event will offer hands-on learning for both parents and children to learn how to use braille and non-visual skills to focus on everyday independence and living skills such as: cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, traveling, and other activities. This will also give you the opportunity to meet other parents of blind children and blind adults living in New Mexico. Free childcare is available, as well as dinner, and travel stipends are available for families that live outside of the Albuquerque area. For more information, please click on the links below:
